When you are moving furniture there are a number of complications that can arise.  Moving large pieces of furniture poses a risk of injury to yourself and others.  Twisted ankles, crushed fingers, injured backs and of course smashed toes are all common complications that can arise when untrained people try to move extremely heavy and cumbersome furniture.

In addition to the risk of personal injury, you risk damaging your precious furniture.  Anyone who has watched an expensive chair tumble down a flight of stairs can testify that hiring unprofessional movers to relocate one’s expensive furniture may not be the wisest thing to do.

Further, even assuming that nobody gets hurt and no furniture is damaged, there are other complications that can arise when moving large or heavy furniture.  Because of the weight of larger pieces, a simple miscalculation on your part can lead to holes in your drywall, scraped and splintered trim around the doors, broken screens and windows, dented or scratched doors, or ripped carpet or linoleum.

Instead of moving large pieces as one unit you may consider disassembling the furniture and moving the individual pieces then reassembling it at your new location.  This will save your back and if you do happen to brush up against a wall or doorway the chances of damage are lower because the individual pieces are not as heavy. This can be especially helpful when furniture is too big to fit through a doorway or around a corner.

Of course disassembling the furniture brings its own unique set of challenges.  Perhaps you cannot figure out how to take it apart without prying or forcing something.  Or perhaps getting it apart is not a problem but you find that getting it back together is much more challenging.  If you have ever finished putting together furniture only to find you had leftover pieces then you are familiar with the challenges of getting furniture assembled correctly the first time.

If you are unable to get the furniture correctly reassembled—or if you find that it takes two or even three attempts to put it back in its original state—you might benefit from consulting a furniture assembly pro.
